Digital Control Question

so with digital control, can you dynamically change the coefficients that are used to compensate a Converter.

I read in the past, that one of the benefits of Digital Control was that you could change the coefficients in the last minute of production, but I was wondering if you could have an algorithm where one changes the coefficients during run time?

thanks

  1. You can certainly change the coefficients even during run time (but there are complexities and stability concerns in doing so; this is not to be taken lightly). Furthermore, you can have auto-tuning algorithms to have controllers with coefficients that adjust in an auto-tuning process to achieve some performance spec. We (and others) have written papers about this. See, for example: J. Morroni, R. Zane, D. Maksimovic, "Design and Implementation of an Adaptive Tuning System Based on Desired Phase Margin for Digitally Controlled DC–DC Converters," Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on, vol.24, no.2, pp.559-564, Feb. 2009

  2. I have worked on a digital controller before that had the ability to change the coefficients during operation - in particular during a transient response. We never could get that part to work correctly and the idea was eventually abandonded.

    From Pres Release:
"Unlike PID-based solutions, the loop used by Maxim's InTune digital power technology provides seamless small- and large-signal response without the need to cross back and forth between linear and nonlinear modes. This enables loop response up to 10x faster than competitors and does not require any user-set thresholds. In fact, the PWM controllers used by Maxim's InTune digital power technology are even faster than their analog equivalents."
